Falcon 4.0: 3dfx vs Rave/Rage128 Image Quality
By Mike
Published: 6/25/99To better show the differences in Glide vs Rave in Falcon 4, below are samples of an exterior shot of the plane that better illustrates the different appearance between 3dfx/Glide mode (Voodoo2/Game Rocket/MP850 card) and RAVE mode (Rage128 card). Note the different appearance of the plane texture mapping. Gamma is different on the two modes, but Glide has a slightly more realistic appearance. RAVE still looked better than I expected from the comments I had heard. Fog/smoke trails from rockets looked good in both RAVE and Glide, as did explosions, etc. I used the latest version of Falcon 4 (1.06c patch applied). The two images below represent examples of the most dramatic differences I've seen so far.

Markarian sent 3 Falcon 4.0 screen captures of the cockpit, comparing Rave (Rage128), 3dfx/Glide (Voodoo2) and software rendering modes. It's hard to really see the difference in these screenshots but the Voodoo2/Glide does look a bit better, and they are large (about 110K) as JPEG compression was kept to a minimum to prevent any loss of image quality. Click on the images below to see the full size screenshot.

These are taken at 800x600, so you may want to download them to your hard drive and compare them offline. They don't show the dramatic differences seen above as the cockpit is more of a static image.
New Falcon Patch: Earlier today Westlake Interactive released Falcon 4 1.06c patch to their website. Here are the details of the changes:
