For Umax Apus 2000/3000 & C500/600 by Dimitrios Tourtouras 3/26/99 |
|
Introduction: This article describes the functionality of a new accelerator board made by MacTell Corp. for the Umax Apus 2000/3000 and SuperMac C500/600 machines made and sold in Europe/Asia/Japan and the U.S.A. respectively. The board also fits at some models that MacTell itself was producing when the cloning was underway. It is very important to note that this review contains the writter's opinions on the product, who is by no means connected to the producer company. The board was initially said to be available by the 4th quarter of 1998, but problems sourcing one of the components used in it, resulted in the set back of the availability date and finally it was made available to customers during the last week of January 1999. This was quite a frustrating situation, since many people were just waiting for a faster option than the one that Vimage and Newer offered (@ 240 MHz) and it initially seemed that MacTell would "kill" the project. Lucky for us that this didnt happen after all. The other positive thing is that the price of the board was set down to $529.00 after the price reductions from Motorola during January. JThe order for the card was made directly from MacTells on-line shop, using their secure server. No problems with that. Since the board was made available it took about 3 working days for the International order to reach me via a Courier Service (FedEx International). This board has been already sighted at many other on-line shops in the U.S like MacMall e.t.c. For an updated list of the companies which offer this product you should look at MacTell's site ( www.mactell.com).The next page of the review discusses the Packaging of the upgrade.
