Reader Review: PowerJolt G3 CPU Upgrade
For Umax Apus 2000/3000 & C500/600

by Dimitrios Tourtouras
3/26/99

Packaging:

The processor came in the familiar MacTell box (they used a similar box as a hard drive I ordered about one year ago – Maxtor DiamondMax 6.4GB IDE). Images are shown below.

In fact the packaging is by no means any problem, since what is in there is what actually matters, it is just that it reminds OEM versions, not retail.

Documentation:

The documentation and the software for the board comes in one single 3.5’’ disk, which contains a SimpleText file explaining the installation procedure and the PowerJolt Init and Control Panel (which by the way are in beta stage and expire after a period of time) to help you get started. Concerning the beta drivers, it should be mentioned that due to the fact that they are in beta stage they come with an expiration date, much like the AutoCache (more on that later on) INIT by PowerLogix. So at some point you may find yourself looking at a dialog box telling you that the driver just expired. Well in fact this is nothing to worry about, since AutoCache 1.0b3 available from PowerLogix’s Site does the same job and it seems that it performs better, too.

For the time being no updated PowerJolt drivers were to be found at MacTell’s Site.

12.3.1999 Update: The new MacTell Drivers have been posted for quite some time now. I recommend their usage, since it seems that they offer the best configuration for the board, enabling it to reach scores of: CPU 910 and FPU 920 using MacBench 5.0 (under optimal working conditions).

The documentation which accompanies the board could be characterized as being too little (by no chance technically sufficient) and it doesn’t actually live up to the expectations of the user. It is only a SimpleText file with 9pt fonts, all underlined. What happened to those PDF files with lots of Technical Specs e.t.c? That option would be appreciated by most owners, I am sure about that. Maybe MacTell should work on improving this as well as the box of the card. It is a pity paying $500.00 when all you get is a white box and no manuals whatsoever.

The next page of the review discusses the Installation of the upgrade.
