About these great volunteers!
Heather Boyle has seven years of Mac experience and works as a Mac Systems
technician, Systems Administrator/Analyst, and technical writer/editor. She
has extensive experience with Desktop Publishing, Mac System Software
7.5 and above, Internet configuration utilities and browsers, software utilities,
hardware and software upgrades, MIDI instruments, and familiarity with
Adobe Premiere v4.2. [Heather is the lone (Wo)Men in Mac that seems to know more
than us all. Her experience in Multimedia and video production never ceases to amaze me. -Mike]
I offer my assistance as a Macintosh SE/30 expert and a G3 Desktop user.
I have been using a Macintosh since 1984, and I have some programming
experience. While I am an attorney by trade, I am a Macophile by
avocation. Most importantly, I am willing to help.
My SE/30 has a Daystar 50Mhz 68030 accelerator, Micron Xceed 24-bit color
video, 13" color monitor, Asante SCSI to Etherenet Converter, and 20MB of
RAM. It does word processing, basic databases, e-mail, and web-surfing.
I also have quite a bit of knowlege about basic G3 Desktops (both Rev. 1
and Rev. 2) with Apple's GV/56K modem. I have installed an internal
modem, RAM, Video RAM, and both regular SCSI and ATA-IDE hard drives in
my G3 Desktop.
As I hope you know, I write the audio column for Mike. During the
day, I do primarily NT workstation and network support for Yale, with
a smattering of mac problems. In a former (and perhaps future)
version of myself, I was a professional musician, which gave me the
opportuinty to play blues for a living in Europe for a year.
My girlfriend and I both use macs, there are four in the house, a
Powerbase, a UMAX S900, an APS 604/200 (basically a Starmax OEM), and
a Powerbook 1400. About a year ago I switched to disk only recording
in my studio, the only tape machines in the room are for other people
who bring stuff. I don't have any spare time, and my memory is
woefully unprotected.
I'm a sys admin for the University of Ga Physics dept. At work we use a
lot of UNIX machines(SGI, RS/6000, Sun and HP), and some windows, but no Macs (I do have a secret plan to introduce them!). However, I do have plenty of Mac
experience. My first Mac was a 512e, followed by an SE/30 and then a Quadra
840AV. I now have an 8600/300 with Mac OS 8.1, BeOS R2, Rhapsody DR2 and
MkLinux Pre-DR3 (not all installed at once though!), so I can cover most any
question about installing alternate OSes. I also have a Powerbook 5300,
but it doesn't get used too much any more (too slow).
As far as software goes, I'm a light user of Photoshop, etc. and do a
little web design and a little DTP. I have a lot more experience in networking,
especially cross-platform stuff like file-sharing and gaming (my roommate has a PC!).
I'm happy to share my experience with all of xlr8's readers, Mike provides a
great service and I want to see it thrive.
George has gained his Macintosh experience from working at Bottom Line
Distribution for the past 4 years. He started out in sales but has been in
charge of new products and marketing for the past year. As a result he has
a wide reange of general knowledge about Mac systems and many Mac
perephials. He is a specialist and owner of the 20th Anniversary Mac, the
new iMac and he also owns a UMAX S900/180. He also has detailed experience
with 9600, 8600, 8500, 6100, 7100, 8100, 6500, PowerBook 5xx, and PowerBook
1400 series systems. He is a complete Mac nut and is a proud member of
CapMac http://www.capmac.org/ the local Austin user group. Please check out
his pages for more info: http://www.georgecole.com/20th/index.html and

I have been doing web design for several years, and have been getting paid
for doing it for about 1 year. I have a passion for the Macintosh, and do
all of my creative design on one. I believe that the Macintosh and
creativity go hand in hand. I have administrated a Macintosh network for
4 years, and have been addressing Macintosh based computer issues for over
5. I have been doing it since the LC 520 was the cool kid on the block.
I am a graduate student at the University of Utah School of Medicine.
Currently I am working on creating new methods for exploring epilepsy,
stroke, and circadian rhythm biology using immunohistochemistry and remote
sensing techniques. Areas of Macintosh related expertise that I can
provide: General info/troubleshooting on older Mac models from the IIsi on
through to 9600/300. I can assist with molecular modeling, statistics, and
image processing and analysis (Especially remote sensing techniques as
applied to neuroscience) along with some limited SGI UNIX/PC use.
(February 2003) Kent is an electrical engineer who works for a major
telecommunications test equipment manufacturer. The first Mac he ever
used was a Mac Plus, and since then has owned numerous Macintosh
systems. As of this writing, his personal projects include G4 Cube
upgrades (including his documented video card mod) and use of Mac OS X
in his primarily PC/Windows networked workplace.
I'm a College Professor (Ecologist) in Texas who has used Macs since 1986.
I'm most familiar with troubleahooting PowerMacs (NuBus and PCI) and Power
Computing Clones (esp. PTP). I use Macs for scientific work, modeling,
statistical analysis, presentations, grade keeping, paperwork, and graphics
(mostly Web).
I have a URL that I use to help local Mac users:

I've been using Macs since 1986 from the Mac Plus through the
IIci,Performas and early PowerMac 6100/7100s to the G3 desktop, the 20th
Anniversary Mac and the G3 Powerbook. I have experience in heading 2 Mac
User groups over that time. My interest is in education,
entertainment/games, and general use. I teach at the University of Hawaii
Medical School and have a practice in Dermatology in a medical group. Like
Randy, I love a good surprise now and then.
Pat is a software industry troublemaker and has been a Macintosh user
since 1985. He is the author of the Conflict Catcher (TM) Reference
Library included with Conflict Catcher 4. He has extensive knowledge of
SCSI, networking, utility software and System Software troubleshooting
issues.
I've been a Mac user since 1989. I spent almost
two years selling Macs, repairing them, and handling phone
support for them (1991-1993). Since then I've earned a degree
in Computer Science at Penn State and worked as a network
support guy for an ethernet network of 75 or so Macs and 5 PCs
(you can guess which gave us more trouble) and a Mac file/web
server. I am currently holding down two jobs: during the week,
I work at Caere Corp, where I've done various things, including
working on OmniPage Pro 8.0 for the Mac (my picture, among
others, is in the secret about box :-) and programming for
embedded PowerPC processors. On Saturdays I refurb older
Macs for Weird Stuff Warehouse. (www.weirdstuff.com)
I am a computer Science major at a university, have used macs for the
last 11 years, starting off with a Mac plus, moved to a LCIII then a
Performa 6214, and am in the process of acquiring a G3 300 Mhz. I try
to be as helpful as I can be with all types of users, be it neophytes to
hardcore programmers.
I've been using Macs since the original Mac 128K in 1984. I currently have
3 PowerMacs(PowerWave, 7200, & G3 Powerbook) in my household, all running
thru an Ethernet hub. I have limited technical expertise but lots of
mileage and want to help Mike offload at least SOME of his e-mail. My
interest is in education,
entertainment/games, and general use. I have used Resolve, Macwrite,
Pagemaker, and Canvas to help me run a small business, and love games and
"edutainment" for my 3 kids. I use a scanner and a digital camera too.
Write me if you have *basic* questions re. the above.

I have been working with Macs since 1986. I have worked on pretty much
every model Mac from the Plus to the new G3s. I have extensive knowledge
in troubleshooting (hardware and Mac OS), networking, internet, and SCSI
issues. While my current job, Residential Networking Specialist at
Grinnell College, requires supporting both the Mac and the
PC, my true love is still the Mac. There probably isn't a more die hard
Mac evangelist at Grinnell College. E-mail may not be answered during the
day depending on work load, but every effort will be made to answer all
e-mails the same day :-)

internet. For software he will help with general issues, programming,
Desktop Publishing, Graphics, entertainment and games, networking and
internet.
I am a long time Windoze/DOS user (sob...) who was introduced to the mac in
1990 and I have loved them ever since. I work for an Apple Specialist
Reseller and Authorized Service Center in the Seattle, Wa area. I have to
know a great deal about almost every mac as a result of my job. I have
access to many of the technical information others don't and a variety of
resources at my disposal. I am also a certified network technician
(hardware/Novell/NT) and can help out in this area as well.
