|
|
| Introduction: | |
| This is Newer Technology's first 1:1 backside cache ratio card - labelled the MaxPowr Pro 750 275/275. This card is so new (at date of this review) that even Newer Tech's product page does not show it listed yet. I was pleased to have a sample to test, and results so far have been very positive, with excellent performance and 100% reliable operation, even with the PowerTower Pro's Adaptec 3940UW card running a Raid array. Although initial performance tests show only a small gain over the previous 266 card (when it was run with the cache set to 1:1), this card was designed to run the cache at full CPU speed, and whereas the 266 was not, although I did not have problems doing so during the short time I had the 266 card. It is Newer's fastest card to date and a fine addition to their expanding line of G3 CPU card upgrades. A unique feature of the Newer control panel is the ability to disable your motherboard cache, which can be a great time saver and a bonus for 95/9600 and Umax S900 owners who have non-removable motherboard cache. My previous tests with Newer's control panel show that performance improves somewhat with the motherboard cache disabled, even in cases where it is larger that the backside cache. Being able to do this without physically removing the motherboard cache is a great feature in my opinion (especially on models like the 8500/9500). Another bonus is the agressive memory timing options in the control panel, allowing owners with all 60ns Ram to gain a little bit more speed with the faster setting (if you're lucky, you might be able to run this setting with 70ns memory too, as some memory will run faster than its rated speed). |
