Mac Pro (2.66GHz/2GB RAM) Performance tests
of Photoshop CS3 Beta vs CS2/Rosetta

Posted: Dec. 18th, 2006
(Updated Dec. 26th with notes on CS3 Bugs/Known Issues.)

I ran the OWC modified PSbench (50MB image) test a few times. Results are below. I ran it straight through three times with no pauses and averaged those times. (those were the 96 second and 59 second times.) The file size created in the first step of the script is 67.083" x 50.333" @ 72 dpi/RGB... which is a 50MB file. (OWC used the 50MB PSbench action script)
Since that didn't take very long to try I just set the script to pause for 5 seconds between actions. I had the info on the bottom of the PS document window set to "show timing" and wrote down the numbers as it went. No big deal. No stopwatch clicking involved. (you need to use a stopwatch for timing if you run the OWC modified PSbench script normally (w/o pauses), but with the doc window set to show timing when running the std PSBench script or pausing the OWC version, the time for each action is displayed. Note you can't compare times for the OWC script with the standard PSBench script since the OWC script does not restore the image between each filter/action. (PSBench's original action does this so that each filter is run on the exact same image, not one that was modified by the previous filter/action.) The order of the OWC version also is changed (i.e. the scale down image is moved to last, since the image isn't restored between actions) and the total time includes the creation of the test image.-Mike)

The memory prefs for Photoshop were the same on both CS2 and CS3 (defaults)...
Cache Levels: 6
Memory Usage: 70% = 1374 MB (Mac Pro had 2GB RAM)
I changed the History States to 1 as requested.
The prefs for memory in CS3 are in a preference window called "Performance." It has Memory Usage, History, Scratch Disk, GPU info all on the same window, which is nice. A screen grab of the CS3 "Performance" window is attached.

The only odd time was the Color Halftone filter, which actually took longer in CS3. (This is what I've mentioned as a plus for the more tedious individual filter test timing, it has a higher "resolution" of results and has in the past pointed out bugs/performance issues with some specific functions that would have been masked if just comparing the total time to run a series of filters.-Mike)
The overall speed difference in CS3 vs CS2 seems greater in actual use.
(See Dan's comments/first impressions on CS3 beta in Friday's news.)

CS3 performance prefs

(Keep in mind the final release of CS3 will likely perform better, as the CS3 Beta may still have debug code, etc. (the final release will likely be more optimized/faster I suspect)-Mike)

CS2/Rosetta
CS3 Beta/Native

I've written some readers with Quad G5 to ask if they would send results of CS3 Beta tests on their machines.

OWC's modified PSBench (50MB) script version download is here. You can download the latest PSBench action script at this page.
The Photoshop CS3 beta is available for download at Adobe Labs. (Login/Adobe acct. required and cookies enabled in browser.) If you missed last week's notes on the beta/trial requirements, see the Adobe press release on the beta.

Bugs and Known Issues in PS CS3 Beta: The Dec. 26th, 2006 news had reader comments/examples on a Photoshop CS3 Beta Image Resize bug that several users confirmed although one reader said he didn't notice it. (Photographs would show it less than the example with borders of larger areas of solid contrasting colors.) A reader mail this morning included a link to an Adobe forum thread confirming it is a known issue with CS3 Beta. That thread also includes a list of other CS3 beta known issues/workarounds and link to a CS3 FAQ:

" Photoshop CS3 resize bug
It's a known issue and I have no problem reproducing it. It is also a show stopper for me.
it's listed as:
#1382654: Mac/Win: Quality of Image Size resizing is worse than CS2
------------------------------------------------------------
Workaround:
1) Use CS2
In the adobe forums.
