Quicksilver to Dual Power Supply ATX Case Conversion
By Stephen Barta
Posted: 8/23/2005

I found an interesting article after I was starting a recent project on adding a second power supply to my Mac tower. Well as it turns out you can connect two power supplies together simply by using their power on leads and a common ground. So I did. I have included a few pictures as to what I did as well as far as the case mod is concerned. Here are the final specs of my tower:

  • Dual 1.8 GHZ 7447a Gigadesigns upgrade
  • 1.5 GB RAM
  • Nvidia Geforce 4Ti
  • 1 x 80GB SATA HD Seagate 2MB Cache
  • 3 x 300GB SATA HD Maxtor 16MB Cache
  • 1 x 120GB IDE HD Maxtor 8MB Cache
  • 5 Port USB 2.0 PCI Card
  • 3 Port Firewire 800 PCI Card
  • Linksys WMP54GS 802.11g PCI Card
  • SIIG 4 Port Serial ATA PCI Card
  • Pioneer DVR-109 in Firewire 800 Case
  • LG 16 X DVD ROM
  • Samsung 52x32x52 CD-RW
  • Iomega Zip 250 Drive
  • Original 344 Watt PS & A-Power 320 Watt Micro ATX PS
  • Logisys - Font USB, Firewire, and 2 Temperature Monitors w/ Hacked front Display to have an additional front Audio Port.

This is just like every other Case Mod except that you need to have the pin diagram for your power supply as well as cutting the mounting for the second power Supply. All this is in a Thermaltake Armor case, w/ 2 x 120 mm Fans 2 x 90 mm fans and as in the pictures 1 more 90mm fan added for extra ventilation. Also there is a PCI exhaust fan near the 2nd power supply for extra heat build up neat PCI cards. WARNING! the only reason I mounted the 2nd Power Supply on the back plate is because the case is wide enough and the 2nd power supply is a 320 Watt Micro ATX Power Supply.

....there was a small problem with the camera so some of the pictures are a little fuzzy.
