Emailer/OS 8.5 Tips - OS 8.5 Menu Fix Hack

This page lists user submitted tips for using Emailer 2.0 with OS 8.5. The commonly reported problem is one of menu colors and windows refreshes, otherwise it works fine. The tip below may help to eliminate the menu color issue but I've not been able to verify this. I've not seen this tip reported elsewhere (but that will change I suspect ;-). If you can verify that this tip solves the menu problem, please contact me.

Menu Fix for Emailer 2.0 under OS 8.5:

Some people have mentioned that the menus display in white (vs. gray) which is the only "incompatibility" w/ Mac OS 8.5. However, you can easily fix this as follows:

• - Go to http://www.digitalalchemy.com/mercutio/ and download a copy of the Mercutio MDEF version 1.5.1 or later.
• - Open the MercutioMDEF.rsrc file and a copy of Claris Emailer with ResEdit.
• - Copy ALL of the Mercutio resources (FOND, MDEF, NFNT) into Claris Emailer and REPLACE resources with the same ids.
• - Save Emailer and quit ResEdit.
• - Emailer menus will now display properly on Mac OS 8.5. ;-)

(BTW, Mercutio 1.5.1 and later also fix the "unlocked GDevice handle" problem that was all the craze a few months ago).

You should only do this on a copy of Claris Emailer and I have only tried this with Emailer 2.0v3 so your mileage may vary on other versions. The same technique also works with many other applications that use the Mercutio MDEF (Netscape Navigator comes to mind). [9/6/98]
