2009 MacBook Pro Firmware Update (claimed fix for reported SATA I interface)
I don't own a MBP, but spotted this at Apple today. From the comments this was released to address the complaints some 2009 MBP (13/15in) owners had on ASP reporting an SATA 1.5Gb/sec interface vs SATA 3.0Gb/sec.

"About MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.7
MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.7 addresses an issue reported by a small number of customers using drives based on the SATA 3Gbps specification with the June 2009 MacBook Pro. While this update allows drives to use transfer rates greater than 1.5Gbps, Apple has not qualified or offered these drives for Mac notebooks and their use is unsupported. "

Hopefully users applying this update don't have the problems many did with the last MBP SMC firmware update. (The one for pre-unibody MBP's that were in the flawed nvidia 8600M production range.)
FYI/Warning: There's now an Apple forum thread that has quite a few people reporting problems after this update, typically with upgraded/replaced (non-OEM) drives (including some WD, Seagate and some SSD drives).

OS X PCI Ethernet Card Compatibility Reports page updated
I've updated the page of OS X PCI NIC Card Compatibility Reports with a G5 tower owner's info on editing driver plist info to get the D-Link DGE-530T working. (But as he mentions, better to just select another model that doesn't require that much work.)

Mac CPU Upgrade/OC Reports Database Updated
The Rate Your CPU Upgrade/OC database had another update this morning. Total to date: 10,377. Here's a summary of the addition (Search by upgrade brand, mac model, etc. for a complete list/comments of all user reports on matching criteria - latest first).

  • OWC Mercury Extreme G4 1.25GHz in (Sawtooth) G4/AGP (rated 9)
    (bought used on ebay)

(Full reviews of G4 and G3 upgrades compared to stock CPUs, including real world apps/game tests, install info, etc. are linked at the G4 upgrade reviews and G3 upgrade reviews pages. Intel-CPU chip swaps (i.e socketed Mac Mini) and OC/CPU module articles are on the Systems page.)

If you've upgraded the CPU on your Mac, send a review with your experience (performance/stability/installation, etc.), Mac Model/Upgrade brand info and overall rating (1= worst to 10=best). If you can, please run some tests with the original CPU vs the upgrade (for example time some tests with your favorite app, game, etc. - see full reviews here for example tests with common apps/games/benchmarks.)
