Tip for Parallels v5 Upgrade Problems (BSODs)
Reply from a reader that had commented on some users having problems (BSOD) with Parallels v5 upgrades (from v4) earlier today:

"Tech support posted a fix:
  • Shut down VM
  • Switch to single processor in the VM
  • Reboot - this gets around the BSOD
  • Update tools
  • Shut down - you can now go back to 2 processors.

Don't know if this worked for anyone else, but it worked for me. (Several other readers replied this tip also solved their BSOD upgrade problems from v4.-Mike)
(MacBook Pro 2.6 Ghz Core 2 Duo with 4 GB RAM, Snow Leopard 10.6.1.)
The dead VM was a Parallels 4 VM (that had been fine in v4). I wanted to see if the problem was in the program or my VM, so I imported a Fusion v3 VM and it ran just fine. So I knew the problem was in the (Parallels) VM itself but had no clue what. Both were XP SP2 (although I just upgraded the XP VM that was dead and now fixed to SP3 with no problems).
-Jack "

His earlier post mentioned 4 other users (w/Win XP VM's) upgrading to v5 had seen this problem.

Blu-Ray user notes on problems copying files from BR discs after Snow Leopard upgrade
"LG Blu-Ray GGW-H20L and Snow Leopard
After a lot of Googling and help from the Apple Discussion groups we've finally managed to pin down the problem we were having copying back graphic files from our Blu-Ray backup disks.
The problem turned out to be with the files containing extended attributes.
We'd used an internal LG GGW-H20L Blu-Ray burner (in early 2008 Mac Pro) to archive our data to BD-R under OS 10.5. (Burned discs in the Finder.) We'd not needed anything from the archive for a couple of months and during this period we'd upgraded to Snow Leopard - when we tried to copy some files back from the BD-R we got an error message "The process could not be completed due to an unknown error (error -50)". Trying to copy to a different drive or to our server always produced the same error. This was only for some of the files, others where perfectly ok.
As a last resort I double clicked one of the "broken" files on the BD-R and, much to my surprise, it opened successfully in it's correct application! I then proceeded to click other files at random and was able to open them all.
After some testing it seemed that it was predominantly but not exclusively InDesign and Photoshop files (CS3) that were causing the problems.
A tip from Barney-15E at the Apple Support Forums to try ditto to copy the files finally brought the breakthrough. Ditto couldn't copy the problem files but at least gave out a more understandable error message "Argument list too long". On Ditto's Man page we found a command for not copying a file's extended attributes and this finally allowed us to successfully copy all files back to disk.
I've yet to discover what the extended attributes were that were causing the problems but the files themselves appear to be perfectly ok. The strange thing is that under 10.5.x everything worked as it should. And although it's good to know that the files themselves are ok, it does mean that we now have to recover and re-burn a couple of Terabytes of data. Which brings me to my question; how can we avoid this problem in the future? Anybody have any suggestions?
Best regards, David W."

I not the best person to ask about this, but the first thing that came to mind were articles about SL and metadata. (You can google those terms for related articles but here's one I remember - Ars' Metadata madness.) If anyone has a suggestion or comment, let me know.

Parallels Desktop v5 for Mac released (w/reader FYI on upgrade problems)
(Updated w/reader comment below - see later post above for tips for anyone with BSODs when upgrading)
Parallels Desktop 5 for mac has been released. Parallels has a press release today titled Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac Offers Fastest Performance on Snow Leopard and for Windows 7 Available, saying among many other improvements, it has "7 times better graphic performance for games and 3D applications than the previous version with Direct X 9Ex with Shader Model 3 and OpenGL 2.1 support".
Computerworld has a related article titled Parallels says new Mac virtualization app (Desktop v5) keeps edge over VMware subtitled "Touts study showing 64-bit Windows 7 runs 22% faster on Parallels than Fusion", but did they test vs Fusion 3 (new) or Fusion 2? And I really doubt the quote there that they claim "that virtualization software such as Parallels are already so streamlined today that most Windows apps will run faster virtually than natively via Boot Camp". How can VM run faster than natively via bootcamp? (Especially for 3d/gaming apps for instance.) I realize that for many users running Windows via VM is a huge productivity benefit but I've never used VM in OS X as the only reason I run windows (via bootcamp) is for entertainment/gaming where I want the max performance possible.
FYI - a reader replied to this post:

"FYI - there are at least four users (including me) who have posted on the Parallels forums about Win XP VMs that worked in Parallels 4 now getting BSODs in Parallels 5. One user went back to v4 and said he's running OK. I imported a VM from Fusion v3 and *it* runs ok in Parallels 5. So upgraders should be forewarned.
-Jack"

If any other readers upgrade to Parallels v5, let me know what you think of it and if you have any problems or not. (Include details on mac model, OS used, etc. - thanks.)
(Update: See Jack's later post above w/Tips for anyone seeing this problem upgrading to v5.)

First impressions of Windows 7/Bootcamp on early 2009 MacBook Pro
I recently installed (OEM/system builder disc) Windows 7 Home Premoum 64-bit on an early 2009 Mac Pro 2.66GHz C2D/4GB RAM (DDR3 1066)/9600GT, 640GB (5400rpm) Toshiba internal drive with the Bootcamp partition using the last 35% of the drive (which hurts disk performance as inner tracks are slower). I'm satisfied with performance from what I've seen so far (including L4D and UT3, overall interface, etc.) and it boots quickly (no bloatware installed - much faster to boot than a neighbor's Sony Vaio w/similar specs). I'm currently using MS's free Security Essentials and immediately installed FireFox 3.5.4 to replace IE8.
After installing Apple bootcamp drivers from the 10.6.0 DVD, I installed Nvidia's latest notebook drivers (186.81 WHQL). And like other Win 7 installs I've seen with Nvidia cards/drivers (Mac Pro w/GTX 285 and a homebrew PC (GTX285 SLI) with driver 191.xx WHQL and 195 beta) - the LCD display settings show 59Hz (vs 60) - you can select 60 but it reverts back to 59Hz. [Tonight just tried the new notebook 195.39 Beta drivers, 59Hz issue not fixed.] (BTW - there's a long thread in EVGA's PC forums on major problems some have seen with 191.xx drivers - some claiming it's damaged their cards, suspecting voltage levels IIRC).
Initial Windows 'Experience' scores ("balanced" power setting) are below just for reference (of course it's not a great benchmark and somewhat of a joke, so take its scores with a grain of salt as you can see from the Mac Pro comparison - Scores in parenthesis are from a 2009 Mac Pro dual 2.66GHz/12GB ram (triple channel mode), GTX285 (v195 beta drivers) 1TB 7200rpm drive (older Hitachi drive) from 64-bit Win 7 Pro - Pro or better reqd for 2 CPU support. Display mode for both were 1920x1200/32bit.)

  • Processor: 6.3 (7.8)
  • Memory: 6.3 (7.8)
  • Graphics: 6.5 (7.3)
  • Gaming Graphics: 6.5 (7.3)
  • Disk 5.9 (5.9)

The overall score is that of the lowest subsystem score (i.e. 5.9 in the above examples). The disk scores are especially suspect as I've had similar scores (or lower) from faster desktop hard drives.
One thing I noticed (that I've seen before on the Mac Pro also) is that my wireless network signal strength (5GHz N network w/AE N base) is shown as much lower in Windows than in OS X. (Same machine/location, same network, etc). Windows 7 shows 2 bars for instance where OS X (SL) shows full bars. I haven't seen any dropouts or problems yet however (L4D steam download took hours, maintaining good xfer rates and never dropped out).
One thing I've noticed with the MacBook Pro (9600M GT) is high GPU core temperatures when stressed (for example even a quick 3 minute game of UT3). I've seen GPU core temps (reported by EVGA Precision) of 99°C (despite fans running full bore). I'll comment more on that tomorrow (with comparison to another 9600M GT PC notebook).
The OEM/system builder discs are much lower cost than retail versions (as much as $80 on the Home Premium version) but don't have any support from Microsoft. But then I've never had to call them anyway so that's not a concern for me. (Retail copies of Win 7 also come with both 32-bit and 64-bit install discs - with the OEM/system builder version you have to buy one or the other.)
