Dual SSD RAID in 2nd Optical Drive Bay using Mac Pro motherboard spare SATA ports
"RAID striped SSDs in a Mac Pro
I added two 60 GB Mercury Extreme Pro SSDs as a RAID 0 array in my MacPro 3,1 (2008).
I connected them to the extra eSata connectors on the motherboard and put them in the empty 5.25 inch Optical drive bay using special OWC multi-mounts. (OWC Multi-Mount Kit - 2.5" to 3.5" (x2) and 3.5" to 5.25" bracket and cable set for 2006-2008 MacPro)

dual SSDs in Optical Bay

I have my system, applications and files I use all the time on the SSD. Files such as music, videos are on regular hard drive.

I was hoping for a speed increase but this is wild. The two hard drive RAID array this replaced had a iBench 3 Disk Test speed of 105. The stock single drive that came with the Mac Pro has a speed of 60. This SSD RAID has a Disk Test speed of over 400.
Applications that used to take over 4 bounces to launch take less than one. Everything is faster. Best upgrade since getting the MacPro.
Regards, Sam W."
