2006 Xserve Dual CPU Upgrade (two 2.33GHz Quad Core Xeons under $50):
(from a reader mail.)

"(2006) xServe CPU Upgrade
Many moons have passed since the old days... I still have a bunch of old macs around.
My primary server these days is an xServe 2006 (1,1). Recently I came across a report online of a CPU upgrade. I shopped on eBay (that's where the xserve came from too) and bought a pair of (used/tested) CPUs listed as "Matched Pair Intel Xeon E5345 2.33GHz/8M/1333 Quad-Core Processor SLAEJ". (Ref: Intel E5345 info.)

This was a SUPER easy drop in upgrade to the xServe, that bumped me from 4 cores at 2Ghz to 8 cores at 2.33Ghz. The CPUs where $47 shipped with expedited shipping. Insane what is available these days for next to no money.
(They are used but even so I suspect some won't believe that price so here's a sample search. A winning bid from June 20th, 2013 was $36.21, plus shipping.)
I don't see an xServe cpu upgrade page, but man is that machine easy to get at. A phillips head screwdriver and 6 minutes...
I am sure there are probably faster CPU options that work also, but this one is a winner. Thanks for still being there.

Thanks Marty. (You win the most bang for the buck upgrade award this week.)
(Update: The Dec 26th news has another 2006 Xserve Dual Quad-Core CPUs upgrade (3GHz X5365's) report.)

Revised Builds (with Fixes) of Java 6 Update 51 for OS X:
I don't use Java but saw this June 21st post that there have been revisions with fixes to the builds for OS X Java Updates released on June 18th:

"FIXED! 1.6.0_51 in Java 1.6.0_51 OS X 2013-004 & 10.6 Update 16

Hello Java developers,
As of 10:00AM PST today (Friday, June 21st, 2013), Apple has revised the "Java for OS X 2013-004" and "Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 16" updates to fix a widely reported issue with the original updates that shipped to customers on Tuesday.

The crux of the problem involved dispatching events through sun.awt.AppContexts which were setup incorrectly when the JVM first initialized the AWT. Some impacted applications could work around the problem by changing the order of initialization of these classes, but we believe that we have provided a comprehensive fix with these revised updates.

If you have previously installed the xM4508 versions of these updates you can upgrade to the fixed xM4509 version by manually installing:
https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572 (OS X 10.7, 10.8+)
https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1573 (OS X 10.6-only)

You can check if you have installed the xM4508 (original) versions by running:
(from terminal)

    /usr/libexec/java_home -v 1.6 -exec java -version

If you have not installed "Java for OS X 2013-004" or "Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 16" already, you should receive this fix automatically through Software Update / App Store.

If you have installed the previous Developer Package, we have posted fixed versions at: https://developer.apple.com/downloads/index.action?name=Java Developer

We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused, and would like to thank all of the developers who have brought this issue to our attention.
Thank you,
Mike Swingler
